Description
Hogback Covered Bridge - Madison County - Iowa by TL Wilson Photography
The Hogback Covered Bridge is a historic covered bridge near Winterset, Iowa. Named after a nearby limestone ridge, it was built in 1884 by Benton Jones over the North River on Douglas Township Road. The 106 feet (32 m) bridge was designed with a Town lattice truss system. It was built with steel pylons to support the main span.
Madison County is the Covered Bridge Capital of Iowa, with the largest group of covered bridges that exists in one area in the western half of the Mississippi Valley. Six of the original nineteen covered bridges of Madison County remain, five of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
